Apply for Housing with Care Housing

At Care Housing, we understand that finding stable, affordable housing can be challenging—especially when life is already overwhelming. That’s why we’re here to provide clear information, practical support, and guidance every step of the way.

We’re a registered not-for-profit community housing provider, and we work in partnership with the NSW Government through the Housing Pathways system. Whether you’re applying for the first time or need support understanding your options, we’re here to help you through the process.

Who Can Apply for Housing

To be eligible for social or affordable housing in New South Wales, you’ll need to meet certain requirements set by the Department of Communities and Justice (DCJ). You may qualify if:

  • You are aged 18 years or older (or 16+ in special circumstances)
  • You are an Australian citizen or permanent resident
  • You currently live in NSW or have a clear reason to move here (e.g. family, safety, work)
  • Your total household income and assets are within approved limits
  • You do not own or have access to any property that could meet your housing needs
  • You are able to sustain a tenancy, either independently or with appropriate support

If you’re not sure whether you meet these requirements, don’t worry—we can walk you through it and help assess your situation.

What Kind of Housing Is Available

Care Housing offers both:

  • Affordable housing – for low to moderate income earners who may not qualify for social housing but still need help with rental costs

We manage a variety of properties, including studio apartments, one- to four-bedroom homes, and specialist housing options. When a suitable property becomes available, we match it to applicants based on their needs and eligibility.

How to Apply

All housing applications must be submitted through the NSW Housing Pathways system. This is a single application process that allows you to be considered for both public housing and community housing (like Care Housing) at the same time.

There are three main ways to apply:

  1. Online – You can submit an application through the NSW Housing Pathways portal.
  2. By phone – Call the Housing Contact Centre on 1800 422 322 (Mon–Fri, 9am–5pm).
  3. With our support – If you’re not sure where to begin or need help filling out forms, collecting documents, or understanding the process, our team can assist you directly.

Documents You’ll Need

To complete your application, you’ll be asked to provide supporting documents such as:

  • Proof of identity (e.g. Medicare card, passport, birth certificate)
  • Proof of income (e.g. Centrelink statements, pay slips, bank statements)
  • Proof of residency in NSW or reason for needing to move here
  • Details of any assets or property you own
  • Medical or support documentation if it relates to your housing needs

Having these documents ready will speed up your application. If you’re missing anything, let us know—we’ll help you figure out the best next steps.

After You Apply

Once your application is submitted, it will be assessed by Housing Pathways. If you’re eligible, your name will be placed on the NSW Housing Register. Your wait time will depend on your needs, priority level, and housing availability in your preferred areas. While you’re waiting, we’ll stay in contact and help with any changes or updates to your application.
